Born in Beaugency, Jacques-Alexandre-César Charles conceived the idea of using hydrogen to inflate the aerostats invented by the montgolfier brothers to achieve the first ascent in a balloon of this type, reaching an altitude of 3,000 meters (December 1, 1783). Charles established the law that bears his name, according to which the relationship between the temperature and the constant volume pressure of a gas is constant. Charles was named to the Academy of Sciences in 1795.
